The City Reeling workshops Winter 2009

City Reeling will be organising up to five informal evening workshops again before Easter for people to learn Scottish reels. Our aim is to combine the pizzazz of the reelers with the precision of the RSCDS and to extend the skills of those that want to explore beyond their current abilities, whether beginners or experienced reelers.

The workshops are located and timed to be convenient for those working in/near central London to come straight from the office. All this series' sessions are at Dragon Hall, close to Holborn tube station (the same location as the final one last year).

Each workshop will be 2 hours of active dancing - good aerobic exercise, with brief pauses between each dance - 7.00-9.00 pm.  There will be an opportunity to socialise afterwards at a table booked at a local restaurant.

Arrive or leave when you like - those arriving before 7pm have a discount on entrance, and experienced dancers are welcomed then to help the beginners. There is no need to come with a partner, though there may be a small amount of gender-bending as needed.

Advance subscriptions required!

To ensure that we make a profit for Epilepsy Action, the sessions will be organised on a subscription basis.  All the 2009 dates are still waiting at this stage for enough advance demand to go ahead.

The good news is that advance subscription:

  • is flexible: if you'd like to participate but think that in reality you won't be able to come to more than three or four nights, you don't have to commit in advance, just pay in advance for the number that you are sure about (or more if you think the charity is a good cause anyway). You don't even need to say which dates you'll be coming to; you can even sell your unused sessions to a friend
  • is refundable: if we don't get to the right sum, then your money will be repaid promptly
  • is flexible (again): we'll also admit people who haven't paid in advance, provided there's room on the night

What the workshops cover

  • Complete beginners, those wanting to go back to basics - from 7pm - 2-3 dances that you will find at every ball, covered in depth by Katherine
  • Those that already reel, but want to master some of the more complicated reels that occur frequently on the dance card - warm up with a couple of the standards at 7.30, then a choice of a couple from the most popular tricky ones, by Davinia/Katherine
  • Those would like to explore more dances beyond the reels dance card (that are seen at the Hurlingham Club Balls/Little Ship Club) - from 8.15, by Davinia
NB all times are approximate.  Please feel free to arrive (and leave - beginners that have dance experience in other styles may last the evening, others may feel they have absorbed enough after an hour or so) at the time/level that suits you.

Prices

Entrance: £10 per head
Discounted for arrival before 6.30: £8
Paid in advance: £8

This is slightly more expensive than a public reels evening, mainly because venue hire becomes cheaper by the square yard the larger it is, and the public nights have more people to fill a larger room.  However, our aim is to raise some funds for Epilepsy Action (aka the British Epilepsy Association), and all profits will go to them.

How to pay:

Advance subscriptions:

  • Cheque (will not be cashed before end Jan)
  • Cash if you see me
  • Bank transfer to my account
  • PayPal to kathpaken@yahoo.co.uk, but ONLY IF you fund your account by direct debit, not debit/credit card (I can't accept the latter without changing from a free personal account)
On the door:
  • Cash only
Gift Aid helps the charity and if you are a higher-rate taxpayer, also helps you - please complete the attached Gift Aid form

Dates

All the workshops are in the Green room, Dragon Hall.

Tuesday 24 Feb - confirmed
Tuesday 24 Mar - confirmed
(all other provisional dates have been cancelled)

Times

All the workshops start at 7.00 pm (30 minutes later than in 2008) and end at 9.00 pm, but you may arrive and leave when you wish, see above for the timing within the workshop.

What to wear

Footwear: preferably not outdoor shoes as they can stomp accidentally over feet in lighter gear. I'd recommend light dance shoes, if you have them, otherwise ones that you can run in (as an extreme test of them), have some "slide" in them and won't mark or dent the flooring.  If you have ballet pumps, and are interested in the more advanced reels towards the end, do bring them along as well.  If you don't have anything that matches this description, don't worry - the floor is quite grippy so bare socks/tights should work well.

Clothing: anything loose enough to raise your arms in and make a long stride, and isn't too warm.  The sartorial range is from jogging gear to "straight from the City office", ie anything goes.

How to join

Contact me on katherine@pakenham.org.uk or my other email addresses/phone numbers, with some idea of which sessions you would be likely to come to, which levels you are interested in: beginner / refresh / extend range within the "social" dances, eg Postie's Jig, Foursome Reel / extend range beyond these, and any suggestions that would improve things for you.

Do forward the URL of this website (http://www.pakenham.org.uk/katherine/reels/) to anyone else who may be interested in the workshops.
